Terms of Use

Last updated: 11 August 2026.

By using Stillness you agree to what follows. It is short on purpose.

What Stillness is

Stillness offers one koan a day from The Blue Cliff Record, and one stick of incense to sit with. After the hundredth koan, the book closes. It is not a meditation programme, not therapy, not medical or psychological advice, and not a substitute for any of them.

Your account is optional

You may use the app entirely without an account. Signing in with Apple keeps your sittings, your progress, and your sealed lines across your own devices. Nothing in the app is locked behind signing in.

You are responsible for keeping access to your Apple ID and your iCloud Keychain. As the Privacy Policy explains, we do not hold your notebook key, so we cannot recover your lines for you if you lose it.

Your writing is yours

You keep every right to what you write. We claim no licence over it, we do not publish it, and we cannot read the lines you sync — they arrive encrypted.

You may export everything as plain text at any time from Settings.

Dana buys nothing

Dana is a voluntary offering. There is one offering, at a single fixed price, sold through Apple’s In-App Purchase as a consumable.

State this as plainly as possible: the offering does not buy you anything inside the app. It unlocks no feature, removes no limit, changes no content, grants no status, and alters nothing about how the app behaves. Everything in Stillness is available to everyone who installs it, before and after any offering. The offering may be made again; making it again still buys nothing.

Because it is consumable and grants nothing, it is not restorable and there is no subscription to cancel. Refunds are handled by Apple under Apple’s terms — we cannot issue them.

Deleting your account

Burn, in Settings, deletes your account and all of its data on this device and on our server. It cannot be undone. See the Privacy Policy.

The service can be unavailable

We make no promise of uptime. The server may be unreachable, and when it is, sign-in and sync will not work. The rest of the app — reading, sitting, writing, the Before journal, local Burn, and the widget — keeps working offline.

We may stop offering the sync service. If we do, the app keeps working on your device, and you can export your notebook as plain text.

Content

The koan renderings shipped with the app are original English renderings prepared for Stillness. You may read them in the app and export your own writing; you may not redistribute the rendered text as a corpus.

No warranty, and limits

The app is provided “as is”, without warranty of any kind. To the extent the law allows, we are not liable for indirect or consequential loss, including loss of data you did not export. Nothing here limits liability that cannot be limited by law.

Changes

If these terms change, the updated date at the top changes with them, and the change is recorded in the repository history of this document.
